HIKING GEAR

Hiking BootsHiking is gaining in popularity in Kenya and it is amazing the number of people who are heading to the outdoors each weekend. I am very happy that the outdoor community is growing. It means that people are taking a keen interest in their health and are also looking for new things to do to occupy their time over the weekends.

All that being said and done, I wonder if people are getting the proper advice on the correct gear that is needed to make the experience in the outdoors not only enjoyable but safe.

Hiking Shoes- This is the entry level into hiking. This is your first and most important item if you are getting into hiking. One must not attempt a hike without proper hiking boots. The boots not only cushion your body from the shock that you are taking it through as you walk for hours on end, but also protects your feet and body from injury.

Most hiking destinations have some rocky terrain, and sneakers just will not give you the support and protection that you need. Good hiking boots will go over your ankle and will protect you from a fracture, strain or sprain should you stumble over the uneven terrain. They have proper grip that will prevent you from slipping and sliding. They are waterproof (most brands are) and will protect you from the rain and getting soggy feet.

Buying a hiking shoe is not straight forward. It pays to talk to people who have been hiking for a while to advice you on the best brands in the market and if you are in Kenya, they can possibly point you in the right direction where you will be able to get a good quality shoe at a reasonable price. Size of the shoe also matters. Hiking boots are generally not the same size as your regular shoe. If you wear a size 6, for example, you may want to buy a size larger. Yes, a 7 will possibly be the best shoe for you. This is because hiking socks are heavy and the duration of hikes are long and your feet will tend to swell- you will thank yourself for buying a size larger.

03_daypack-rucksack-28LOnce you have the proper hiking boot, then comes a proper hiking bag. As always, I advice my team to wear proper hiking boots and carry a hiking daypack when they are joining us. I must say that 99% of newbies ignore this and come out with whatever it is that they have. Experience is the best teacher. After going for a hike with the wrong shoe and the wrong bag, your body will feel it. You will be in pain and you will notice that those who are properly kitted are bouncing around and have energy because they are focused on the trek and not the pain that is emanating from their bodies. A bad daypack will give you neck, shoulder and back pain after a long walk. A proper hiking bag allows you to carry your water and snacks without feeling any discomfort.

If you are looking into getting into hiking, these are two things you should invest in. Talk to your buddies who regularly hike for advice on brands and suppliers in your area. Also feel free to get in touch with us info@mountainslayers.com and we will give you suggestions on where you can kit up. Enjoy the outdoors; it was created for your pleasure.
